Speaking as a firefighter with thirty-six years of service under his belt, I had a rapidly sinking feeling that day at what I had just witnessed on news reports. At World Trade, responders worked under amazingly difficult and unprecedented conditions, all the while feeling profound sadness at the deaths of their peers and the hopelessness of finding survivors. I lost 343 of my brothers that day, and can say without fear of contradiction that I will never forget those that made the ultimate sacrifice. This book nailed the emotions, the thoughts, and the soul of what it means to be a firefighter. This book is a must-read for responders and the public—it provides an accurate portrayal through the eyes of someone who really understands what firefighters endure.
